OSCE observation mission starts activities in Georgia

OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights officially started observation mission in Georgia today. The upcoming elections of local self-government will be an important test for Georgia, the head of the mission Audrey Glover said to a press conference today.

She said that up to 350 short-term observers from the OSCE member countries will observe the elections. They will arrive in Georgia the day before the election. The observers will monitor the process of opening polling stations, voting, calculating and summing up results.

The OSCE observation mission consists of 16 experts and 24 long-term observers.
"We want to fully assess the process.We will monitor issues such as media coverage of the electoral process, use of administrative resources, how equal conditions are created for the candidates. Also the question of resolving election litigation is important," said Glover.

According to her, the main task is to monitor if the elections will be held in accordance with international standards and the Copenhagen Document. The first report of the mission will be submitted one day after the elections, and the final will be published within two weeks.
