Winners of a school essay contest on "Mother - Our Sanctity" were announced today. The contest was held in honor of prominent scientist and ophthalmologist, academician Zarifa Aliyeva.
Speaking at the awards ceremony held by the Azerbaijani State Committee on Family, Women and Children, Chairman Hijran Huseynova told contest participants about Aliyeva's life, work, academic achievements.
"Zarifa khanum was a wonderful doctor and mother. Today, Azerbaijani First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva continues her traditions. Zarifa khanum will remain as a great figure in Azerbaijani history," Huseynova said.
About 55 essays were submitted during the contest.
Public School No. 281 pupil Aygun Allahverdiyeva won first prize. Humanities and Technical Lycee No. 147 pupil Ayan Gelbinur took second. Winners received special certificates and gifts.
The first place winner was awarded a laptop.
Ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova said Aliyeva was leading female figure in the country's history.
"Everyone is born, but not everybody can become a person. Her life will be an example for future generations," Suleymanova said.
