Construction of a new TransCaspian gas pipeline will help EU countries to diversify energy carriers sources, as well as reduce its dependence on Russian gas, Adris Piebalgs, EU Commissar for Energy Issues, said in Astana today, Trend reports referring to RBK.
Russia is a good supplier, but we were eyewitnesses what happened in Georgia when the whole country left without heat and electricity as a result of a gas pipe explosion. Diversifying the supplies, first of al, will help us to avoid troubles, secondly, will make the energy carriers market liquid, he said, Reuters reports.
Mr. Piebalgs said that in the future, Kazakhstan might become on of the key suppliers of energy carriers to EU.
During his speech in Astana, Mr. Piebalgs also said that EU and Kazakhstan have already launched real projects, and that they were studying a possibility on transporting gas via the Caspian Sea where Kazakhstan main gas and oil resources were.
