Kazakhstan ratifies agreement with Turkey on transfer of sentenced prisoners

On Wednesday the Majilis (lower chamber) of Kazakhstan's parliament approved two draft laws on ratification of agreements with Turkey and China on the transfer of sentenced prisoners.

"The documents regulate the issues of transfering Kazakh citizens sentenced to imprisonment by Turkish and Chinese courts and vice versa, Turkish and Chinese citizens sentenced to imprisonment by Kazakhstan's courts, to serve their sentences in the States of their citizenship," press service of the Majilis said.

Aside from that, the Majilis began consideration of the draft law 'On Ratification of the Protocol on Making Changes to the Treaty with Azerbaijan on the Transfer of Persons Sentenced to Imprisonment for a further serving of imprisonment', dated 10 June 1997.

Currently, the Interior Ministry is the authorised body on these matters and after ratification the Prosecutor General's Office of Kazakhstan will be defined as Kazakhstan's competent authority on implementation of this agreement in line with the requirements of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Members of the Majilis adopted one more draft ratification law approving the Kazakh-Czech Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters.

The interaction of the two countries' competent authorities is defined in accordance to the Treaty while carrying out an investigation and trial proceedings on criminal cases and in the collection of information and evidence with regard to the crimes.
