After Palestine has achieved the status of an observer at the UN,the priority for the country is to achieve unity within itself, Palestinian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Naser Abdel Karim told Trend.

"Internal unity which is the most important issue in solving the Palestinian problem will now become a priority for the government. It is necessary to stop the strife and discord among Palestinians," Karim said.

Abdel Karim expressed the hope that serious steps will be taken in this direction in the coming days and noted that after unity, the Palestinian government will start to explore ways to restore peace talks with Israel based on international law.

Abdel Karim also noted that Palestine is grateful to Azerbaijan for support of the Palestinian people throughout the country's history, and to Azerbaijani government for voting in favour of the resolution on granting Palestine the observer status at the UN.

According to Karim, the countries that supported granting observer status to Palestine at the UN, in fact voted for humanism and international human rights and these countries are friends of Palestine.

"This voting was a positive step towards a peaceful settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Those who voted in our favour have actually chosen a peaceful solution to this problem, a path that is based on international resolutions and decisions of the United Nations," he said.

On Thursday the UN General Assembly granted Palestine the status of an observer at the UN. A resolution was approved by 138 of the 193 UN member states, nine states voted against with the rest abstaining from voting.
