The carbon tax, which the EU countries plan to introduce for exporters from 2025, will negatively affect the oil and gas sector of Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan Vice Minister of Energy Zhumabay Karagaev said, Trend reports.
Therefore, the Ministry of Energy does not exclude the possibility that Kazakhstan will look to expand export directions.
“Today there is reason to believe that the subsequent introduction of this carbon tax will have a negative impact on the oil and gas production sector. The first issue is whether there are alternative routes, to consider alternative export routes - this is China or the countries of Southeast Asia,” Karagaev said.
He added that the bulk of Kazakhstan's oil exports account for the EU countries. And if these states apply a carbon tax, it will be necessary to consider alternative routes.
At the same time, the vice minister noted, it is also necessary to consider the option of using modern technologies in production. That is, to show the EU countries that, when extracting raw materials, Kazakhstan has a small impact on the environment.
