Imports of energy carriers to Turkey grow by quarter

In the first quarter of 2012, Turkey imported 24.8 percent more electricity than during the same period in 2011, the Turkish Statistics Institute said on Thursday.

During this period, Turkey imported energy carriers of $ 14.6 billion against $ 11.7 billion in the first quarter of 2011.

Thus, the energy carriers' imports account for 26.3 per cent of the country's total imports, which amounted to $ 55.7 billion in January-March.

According to the report, Turkey imported in January-March 2012 some 4.42 million tons of oil. Of this amount, 1.39 million tons were imported in January, 1.32 million tons - in February, 1.71 million tons of oil - in March.

In the first quarter of 2011, Turkey imported 4.1 million tons of oil.

In late March this year, Turkey reduced the import of Iranian oil by 20 percent, partly replacing it with the Libyan. The country is also negotiating to import oil from Saudi Arabia.
