Egyptian prosecutors on Tuesday began investigating a popular satirical TV show host for allegedly defaming President Mohammed Morsi on his programme, DPA reported.
An Islamist lawyer had filed a complaint against Bassem Youssef for mocking Morsi.
Youssef is known as "Egypt's Jon Stewart" - a reference to the US political satirist who hosts Comedy Central's Daily Show. He started his show after the popular uprising that ousted longtime leader Hosny Mubarak almost two years ago.
Youssef has been satirizing speeches by Islamists in his recent episodes, broadcast on a private Egyptian Satellite channel. Last year, he mocked the then-ruling military council and different politicians who were vying in the presidential elections.
In recent months, Islamists have filed several cases against journalists and actors accusing them of inciting violence or insulting Morsi, who took office as Egypt's first elected civilian, Islamist president in July.
