BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 23. COP29, to be held in Azerbaijan, needs to incorporate crucial elements into new agreements, Lars Ivar Nitter Havro, Senior Analyst & Product Manager, Energy Macro at Rystad Energy told Trend.
“Despite low expectations, COP28 was seen by many as a significant milestone, with the first-time mention of a transition away from fossil fuels. As stakeholders across the globe gather at COP29, hosted by a major oil producing country for the second consecutive year, there is a clear opportunity to build on the momentum from COP28,” he said.
The analyst noted that while the agreements from COP28 set
ambitious targets like tripling renewables and doubling down on
energy efficiency, it lacks specific and necessary action plans,
timelines and enforcement mechanisms to ensure these commitments
are met.
“One of the main challenges at COP29 will be to incorporate these
crucial elements into the new agreements, amidst the intricate
geopolitical dynamics currently unfolding, particularly in the
Middle East. In the light of the recent turmoil, Azerbaijan,
uniquely positioned at the crossroads between East and West, seeks
to underscore the role of peace and conflict resolution in
enhancing climate action. Stakeholders should recognize how
regional conflicts can undermine environmental goals and
acknowledge the beneficial impacts that stability and peace can
offer to critical climate initiatives,” added Lars Ivar Nitter
Havro.
Azerbaijan will host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) this November. This decision was reached during the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11, 2023. In less than two weeks, Baku is poised to become the epicenter of global climate discussions, welcoming an estimated 70,000 to 80,000 foreign delegates.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, established during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aims to avert perilous human interference with the climate system. COP, an acronym for Conference of Parties, signifies the highest legislative authority overseeing the Convention's implementation. Currently, 198 nations are party to the Convention. By default, COP sessions are convened annually unless otherwise decided by the participating parties. The inaugural COP convened in March 1995 in Berlin, with its secretariat headquartered in Bonn.
As Azerbaijan prepares to host COP29, it assumes a pivotal role in advancing global efforts to address climate change, underscoring the urgency and importance of international cooperation in combating environmental challenges.
