The UN has failed to fulfil its promises regarding the investigation of the use of chemical weapons in Syria, Advisor for Political and Information Affairs to the Syrian President Buseyna Shaaban said in an interview to RT on Thursday.
"The Syrian government asked the UN to conduct an investigation on the use of chemical weapons by armed rebels. However, instead of investigating cases of usage of chemical weapons in the village of Khan al-Assal and Aleppo, the UN spoke about other instances of its use," Shaaban said.
According to her, if the UN says there have been some cases of use of chemical weapons by the government, the Syrian government is willing to consider this evidence.
"If the UN refuses to do so we are prepared to go further. We will invite representatives of neutral countries such as Russia and China, to investigate the matter," Shaaban said.
According to the advisor to the president of Syria, Damascus hopes that the U.S. position on this issue will change following the appointment of John Kerry as the Secretary of State.
Earlier, the Syrian government asked the United Nations to investigate the use of chemical weapons in the suburbs of Aleppo on March 19, leaving 25 victims. Authorities said the incident was caused by the opposition. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launched an investigation into the incident, but reportedly under the influence of a number of Western members of the Security Council, unwarrantedly expanded the mandate of the mission trying to instruct it to investigate all the other cases of alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria.
Clashes between government forces and the armed opposition have been on-going for over two years in Syria. According to UN, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria exceeds 70,000 with around three million in need of humanitarian assistance. The Syrian authorities say they oppose the well-armed militants.
