The oil price of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) rose above 81 dollars at the start of the week, the group said Tuesday.
The cartel's basket price reached 81.31 dollars per barrel (159 litres) on Monday, 1.38 dollars higher than on Thursday, the last previous trading day, DPA reported.
Markets were pushed by speculators investing in oil, despite the fact that demand for the commodity is recovering only slowly, analysts at Commerzbank in Frankfurt said.
OPEC's 12 members produce over a third of global oil supplies.
