BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 24. The Baku International Sea Trade Port (BISTP) has joined the Ocean Coalition amid new climate challenges during the 'Ocean of the Future' meetings held as part of the high-level segment of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Trend reports via the statement from BISTP.

"The head of BISTP represented Azerbaijan and the Caspian and Black Sea regions at the high-level 'Ocean of the Future' meeting, invited by the leadership of the UN Global Compact. We are committed to the sustainable development of seas and oceans.

During the meeting in New York, we signed a declaration calling for urgent action to decarbonize maritime shipping and transition to appropriate fuels," the statement said.

The statement highlighted that BISTP is the first in the Caspian and Black Sea regions to join the Ocean Coalition, which brings together 150 leading global shipping and port companies and will help promote sustainable practices.

"BISTP is also participating in the UN Dialogue on Ocean Security and the Annual Meeting of the UN Global Compact on advancing sustainable maritime business practices," the statement added.

Cargo owners have adopted a joint statement calling for the urgent conclusion of a global agreement on the decarbonization of maritime shipping.

The statement adopted at the meeting calls on all member states of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to support a global regulatory framework that will fairly, inclusively, ambitiously, and timely accelerate the use of zero and near-zero greenhouse gas emission fuels.

"We urge all UN member states to work together on innovative policies and financial mechanisms to level the playing field between fossil fuels and zero or near-zero greenhouse gas emission marine fuels.

It's crucial to accelerate and scale up the production capacity of such marine fuels and the necessary infrastructure to support them to expedite the 'green' transition of the global supply chain," the statement emphasized.
