Iran, Azerbaijan to inaugurate Giz Galasi hydro junction by forthcoming September

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 12. The Giz Galasi hydro junction built on the Araz River between Iran and Azerbaijan will be put into use by September 22, 2023, the Executive Director of East Azerbaijan Regional Water Company Yousef Ghaffarzadeh said, Trend reports.

Ghaffarzadeh noted that the Giz Galasi hydro junction located 12 km from the Khudaferin hydro junction on the Araz River between Iran and Azerbaijan has been built for more than 20 years and is ready for use.

The director also added that located 210 km north-east of Tabriz, the center of Iran's East Azerbaijan Province, the Giz Galasi hydro junction has a height of 37 meters and a water capacity of 62 million cubic meters.

According to him, this hydro junction will allow to irrigate 12,000 hectares of land in East Azerbaijan Province of Iran, as well as 62,000 hectares of land in Ardabil Province.

In total, 5.5 trillion rials (about $131 million) has been spent on the Giz Galasi hydro junction. The mentioned hydro junction will provide water to 74,000 hectares of land in Iran's East Azerbaijan and Ardabil provinces. With the launch of this hydro junction, 85,000 people will be employed.

The Giz Galasi hydro junction will process 2 billion cubic meters of water per year (1 billion cubic meters for Azerbaijan, 1 billion cubic meters for Iran).
