The first results in US presidential elections showed wins for both President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney, with each picking up one state as polls closed on much of the East Coast, DPA reported.
Obama won the vote in the north-eastern state of Vermont, according to CNN projections, while Romney won in the southern state of Kentucky with 66 per cent to Obama's 32 per cent.
Vermont is considered one of the most reliably Democratic states in the country and Kentucky is solidly Republican.
