Israel evacuates two more illegal West Bank outposts: report

Israel Materials 27 May 2009 13:31 (UTC +04:00)

Israeli security forces dismantled two more illegal outposts in the West Bank early Wednesday, Israel Army Radio reported.

A contingent of Border Police forces as well as civilian police units took apart in the evacuation of the two outposts in the Jewish settlement of Kiryat Arba, which is near the West Bank city of Hebron, said the report.

Havat Federman (Federman farm), one of the outposts, built by right-wing settler Noam Federman, was already dismantled by security forces a year ago and the Federman family has recently been returning slowly to the site, Xinhua reported.

Police forces who arrived at Havat Federman prior to the evacuation were surprised to find just one large tent filled with supplies.

Givat Avichai (Hill 18), the other outpost, was built by yeshiva students from Kiryat Arba.

The five youths who were there when the evacuators arrived did not resist the evacuation and confiscation of two makeshift huts and the electricity equipment, according to local daily The Jerusalem Post.

Wednesday's evacuation came a week after Israeli security forces took down the West Bank outpost of Maoz Esther. However, just hours after being evacuated last Thursday, the outpost was rebuilt by Jewish settlers who returned to the site.

On Sunday, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak declared that Israel will dismantle 22 illegal outposts in the West Bank, warning that settlers will be evicted forcefully if they resist.

"The 22... have to be dealt with now in a responsible and appropriate manner. First of all, exhaust all efforts with dialogue and if that proves impossible, then unilaterally, use force if necessary," Barak said during the weekly cabinet meeting.

Some 100 outposts, set up independently by Jewish settlers without formal government approval, are scattered throughout the West Bank, said local daily Ha'aretz, adding that these outposts exist next to the 121 authorized West Bank settlements, which are legal under Israeli law.
