By Matanat Nasibova – Trend:

Rice crop greatly increased in Azerbaijan’s Astara district in 2019 compared to 2018, a source in Azerbaijan’s Astara Rice enterprise told Trend.

This indicator grew from 1,000 ton in 2018 1,400 tons in 2019, the source said.

“The highest yields among local types of rice account for Sadri, Hasani, Pahriz, which are traditionally grown in Astara. The yield of these types of rice exceeds 30-35 centners per hectare. “The products are sold in Astara and supplied to Baku and other cities of the country,” the source added.

"At the same time, the quality of Azerbaijani rice is high as of the rice imported from abroad,” the source said. “This year it is planned to increase the production of local rice to enter foreign markets in the future.”

“According to our estimates, this may become real next year,” the source said. “At present, types of rice imported from Italy, as well as Iranian Hashimi rice, which is grown in Astara district are in the greatest demand in the domestic market.”

There are three zones in Azerbaijan, namely, Lankaran-Masalli, Sheki-Zagatala and Guba-Khachmaz, in which rice cultivation is developed.
