Israeli aircraft bombed seven targets in the Gaza Strip overnight, including what a military spokesman described as a weapons-manufacturing facility, an Israeli statement said early Friday.
Unconfirmed reports from Gaza said one person was killed, DPA reported.
The Israeli airstrikes came in response to a series of well-coordinated attacks in southern Israel Thursday when a group of militants shot up Israeli vehicles near the border with Egypt and then fled.
Four of the gunmen were killed after being cornered in a shootout with Israeli troops who had rushed to the scene, but another firefight broke out in the late afternoon. Israeli reports said at least 18 militants had taken part in the series of attacks Thursday.
The number of Israelis killed in those attacks rose to eight overnight after a border policeman died from wounds sustained in the late afternoon shootout.
About 40 Israelis were wounded.
Israel bombed the Gaza Strip Thursday afternoon, several hours after the first shootout, killing six people, including a leader of the radical Popular Resistance Committees.
Militants in the strip fired six missiles at Israel during the night. There were no reports of damage or injuries.
In Egypt, a state-run newspaper reported that a military officer and two policemen were killed near the border with Gaza in an Israeli airstrike.
The al-Ahram newspaper quoted a military source as saying the plane was targeting infiltrators who crossed into the Egyptian town of Rafah. Several policemen were injured, he was quoted as saying.
