The closure of German airspace has been extended until 8 pm (1800 GMT) on Sunday due to the cloud of volcanic ash hanging over Europe, air traffic controllers announced, DPA reported.
The decision extended Germany's flight ban by a further six hours, after all flights had previously been cancelled until 2 pm.
Rail operator Deutsche Bahn has put on extra trains to meet a steep rise in demand.
Tens of thousands of airline passengers have been stranded, as ash from a volcano near Iceland's Eyjafjallajoekull glacier has led to an unprecedented shutdown of much of European airspace.
