Former Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman died in an explosion in the Syrian capital of Damascus, Al Jazeera TV channel quotes one of the leaders of the Syrian opposition Kheysam Malikh as saying on Tuesday.

According to Malikh, Suleiman was in Damascus on behalf of Dubai's Ruler Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for clarifying the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian authorities.

Earlier Egyptian media outlets reported that Suleiman, who was also former vice-president of Egypt, died in July in one of the hospitals in the U.S.

Suleiman planned to take part in the presidential elections in May and June of 2012, however, the electoral commission did not register him as a candidate 'because of breaches in the collection of signatures' in his favour.
